Prescription Drug “Take-Back”

The City of Germantown is partnering with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Tennessee District to conduct a prescription drug “Take-Back” program Saturday, April 26, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at two locations. Germantown Police will be collecting expired, unused or unwanted prescription drugs at Kroger, 2130 Exeter Road, and Target, 9235 Poplar Avenue, near Forest Hill-Irene Road. Only pills or patches will be collected. Liquids, needles or sharps will not be accepted. The program is free and anonymous.

The Take Back initiative is a program of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) which addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Prescription drugs that languish in medicine cabinets create a public health and safety concern because they are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high; almost twice as many Americans (6.8 million) currently abuse prescription drugs than the number of those abusing cocaine, hallucinogens, heroin and inhalants combined, according to the 2012 National Survey on Drug Use and Health. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet.

Last October, Americans turned in 324 tons of prescription drugs at over 4,114 sites operated by the DEA and its thousands of state and local law enforcement partners. When those results are combined with what was collected in its seven previous Take Back events, DEA and its partners have taken in over 3.4 million pounds of pills.
