Cirque Kalabanté at GPAC

Explosive drumming and dance routines, the group delivered mind-blowing acrobatic sequences with extraordinary precision.” – Vice Magazine

A show by Yamoussa Bangoura inspired by daily life in Guinea, Afrique en Cirque shares the beauty, youth, and artistry of African culture. A colorful production beyond its scenery, costumes, and staging, it makes any theater vibrate with energy and represents the strength, agility, and joys of young Africans. Acrobats execute gravity-defying moves and human pyramids, accompanied by the contemporary sounds of Afro-jazz, percussion, and kora—a 21-string instrument used extensively throughout West Africa. Welcome to the universe of Kalabanté Productions, and prepare for an unforgettable journey.

First becoming interested in the circus arts as a young man growing up in Conakry, Guinea, Bangoura once dreamed of founding a school of circus arts and directing his own multidisciplinary company specializing in African arts. A true lifelong student, Bangoura found inspiration all around him by studying everything from the circus performers he saw on European TV to the Nyamakala practiced by the Fula people of West Africa and by practicing on the beach and soil around his home.

Bangoura went on to join Guinea’s original circus company, Circus Baobab, as well as Cirque Éloize, Cavalia, and Cirque du Soleil. In 2007 he finally realized his dream and opened his own company, Kalabanté Productions, in Montreal, Canada, accompanied by several family members, including his twin sisters, brothers, and cousins. Kalabanté Productions is proud to share their work, achievements, and skills to inspire others.
