The City of Germantown's Stormwater Management program is at the forefront of ensuring a healthy and resilient community. We take a comprehensive approach to managing stormwater runoff, flooding concerns, and the protection of our natural resources.

The Germantown Stormwater Management program aligns with best practices established by leading environmental agencies (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and  Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation). By employing a multifaceted approach, we create a healthier environment, minimize flood risks, and protect our valuable natural resources for generations to come.

Our Multifaceted Program:

The program encompasses various initiatives, including:

  • Infrastructure Investments: This involves crucial capital improvement projects designed to effectively manage stormwater flow and control flooding.
  • Maintaining City Systems: We prioritize the ongoing maintenance of public stormwater systems to ensure optimal functionality.
  • Flood Mitigation: Our flood control programs aim to lessen the impact of flooding and associated damage along the Wolf River and Nonconnah Creek.
  • Smart Development: Flood management programs guide development in floodplains, promoting responsible land use practices.
  • Monitoring Water Quality: Regular stream resource monitoring allows us to assess water quality and take necessary steps to address any issues.
  • Private Facility Inspections: Inspections of private stormwater facilities ensure proper operation and maintenance.
  • Community Engagement: We actively engage the public through education and outreach initiatives, fostering a shared responsibility for a sustainable future.

Drainage on Your Property: What You Need to Know

As your neighborhood ages, drainage patterns can shift. It's important for homeowners to remember they're responsible for stormwater flowing through their property without causing problems for themselves or their neighbors.

Over time, landscaping features like fences, pools, and plants can alter how water flows. Without proper planning and upkeep, these changes can lead to drainage issues on your property and those around you.

Typical examples include:

1. Sinkholes over a drain pipe
2. Erosion around a pipe headwall or inlet
3. Water backed up from an inlet

The City is not responsible for drainage problems caused by private property owners. Some examples are construction of landscaping, sodding, fences, pools, etc. The City is only responsible for drainage structures and lines within public easements or rights-of-way, which are documented on recorded plats.
