The Germantown Engineering Department is dedicated to creating a well-maintained and efficient transportation system for everyone. This includes drivers, cyclists, pedestrians, and more. We take a comprehensive approach to achieve this goal, ensuring a safe and enjoyable travel experience for all users.

Traffic Signal Management: Our department operates and maintains traffic signals at 39 intersections throughout Germantown. This includes advanced warning lights near schools, which help to improve safety for children and parents during drop-off and pick-up times.
Signage and Striping: Our engineers design clear and informative signage that guides motorists and pedestrians safely throughout the city. This includes traffic signs, street name signs, and pedestrian crossing signals. We also design and install pavement markings, such as lane stripes, crosswalks, and bike lane designations. These visual cues help to ensure everyone understands the rules of the road and can navigate the transportation system safely.

Traffic Signal Outages?

Flashing Red: Come to a complete stop and proceed cautiously when safe to do so.
Flashing Yellow: Approach with caution and proceed slowly through the intersection.
Non-functioning Signal: Treat the intersection as a four-way stop.

Traffic in Your Neighborhood?

Children at Play Signs: These signs are typically placed near schools and parks to enhance safety in designated areas. Installing them on residential streets is generally not applicable.
Speed Bumps: Germantown currently does not utilize speed bumps as a traffic calming device.
