The Germantown Animal Shelter is all about making sure every paw finds its perfect match. Our shelter can host up to 15 dogs and 25 cats, ensuring they have a comfortable stay until they find their forever families. If you're a Germantown resident looking to surrender an animal, we've also got you covered — just keep in mind that there's a $50 fee to help us care for it.

The Germantown Animal Shelter is also responsible for responding to all
animal-related ordinance issues. For stray animal pick-up, dead animal pick-up or for more information, call (901) 757-7358.

The shelter is located at 7700 Southern Avenue. Animal control services are provided Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Adoption services are available Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The Germantown Animal Shelter will impound animals that pose an immediate threat to public safety, that need immediate medical care, are in danger or a danger to themselves. Strays will continue to be impounded as space allows. If assistance is needed to care for a stray while in a citizen's custody, please contact us for aid.

Adoption

Adoption hours are Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Adoption fees are usually $80 per animal and an Adoption Questionnaire is required. For cats, this fee includes spay/neuter surgery, first round of vaccinations and rabies, fecal testing/deworming, FIV/FeLV testing and microchipping. For dogs, this fee includes spay/neuter surgery, first round of vaccinations and rabies, fecal testing/deworming, heartworm testing (treatment if needed) and microchipping. All animals are examined at Germantown Farmington Animal Hospital and medically cleared before adoption.

The Germantown Animal Shelter is a first-come, first-serve facility for adoptions. Animals may be placed on a 24-hour hold after Step 4 (below) is completed.

Here’s how the process of adopting an animal from the Shelter works:
1.  The potential adopter must complete the Adoption Questionnaire form and have the form approved by Shelter staff 30 minutes before closing.
2.  All family members in the home must meet the animal or be aware that the potential adopter wants to adopt the animal.
3.  Any potential adopter must physically meet with the animal they want to adopt. 4.  For all dog adoptions, meet and greets are required if there are other dogs living in the household or who are frequent visitors. 5.  The adopter will then sign and review the adoption contract in detail with staff.

Volunteer at the Shelter

The shelter welcomes volunteers who walk and bathe dogs, play with cats and help socialize the animals. We particularly need volunteers who can help out on weekdays. Volunteers are required to attend a 20-minute orientation session before interacting with pets. Volunteers must be at least 14 years of age and accompanied by their parent/guardian up to age 16. For more information on volunteering, contact Lia Roemer at LRoemer@Germantown-TN.gov or (901) 757-7358.
Make a Donation
The shelter accepts donations of food and supplies. Preferred pet food brands include Royal Canin, Purina, Iams, Hill's Science Diet, Eukanuba and Diamond. The shelter always has a need for toys, grooming, supplies, sanitation supplies, animal beds, blankets, leashes, collars and harnesses.
Euthanasia

Shelter personnel work diligently to place unclaimed animals into new homes. Unfortunately, some animals are simply too ill, injured or aggressive. Humane euthanasia is an option when deemed necessary by staff and veterinary professionals.
