  • Public Works

    • Can we opt out?

No, all meters will be replaced with the improved technology.
    • Are these meters the same as those causing issues in Memphis?

No, the City has selected a different meter than those installed by MLGW.
    • Can I request a pressure regulator?

If desired, a customer can hire a plumber to install a pressure regulator on their side of the meter.
    • Do these meters emit a wireless signal?

The City’s water meters will emit an intermittent 450 megahertz radio frequency. The City’s water meters will emit less radio frequency energy than common household devices like cell phones, Wi-Fi routers and microwave ovens. Unlike cell phones and Wi-Fi, which transmit constantly, these meters transmit briefly and infrequently. Meters will be placed away from homes, near the street, further reducing any potential exposure.

    • Do we need to flush our water after installation?

Yes, a brief flush of water from an outside faucet will clear any debris introduced during the meter replacement.
    • How will the new meters handle water collecting in the meter box?

The meters are factory-sealed to prevent water intrusion.
    • What if a water pipe on my side of the meter breaks during installation?

The contractor is responsible for completing each installation without leaks. There is a one-year warranty on workmanship.
    • What if I have pressure controls on my meter?

Private pressure regulators will not be affected, as they are on the resident's side of the meter.
    • What if my meter is located in my driveway?

If pavement adjustments are needed, Germantown staff will assess and restore the area to its original condition.
    • Who is funding the meter replacements, and why can't residents opt out?

The City is responsible for accurate water metering. This project is funded by utility reserves and grants. Manual meter reading will no longer be used, and the water metering infrastructure is the City's responsibility.
    • Will my water bill go up?

Water bills are based on consumption. The new meters provide extremely accurate readings, which may affect bills depending on actual usage.
    • Will the city address high water pressure concerns?

The City's water pressure is within state guidelines, contributing to Germantown's Class 1 ISO rating. Most customers appreciate the higher pressure for faster appliance operation and better shower performance.
    • Will the new meters have leak detection?

Yes, the new meters include leak detection capabilities.
    • Will this impact residents receiving water from MLGW?

Yes, all water metering is provided via Germantown assets.
    • Will this project address water pressure issues?

No, the project will not affect water pressure.
    • Will yards be dug up during installation, and will any damage be repaired?

Most meters will be replaced in existing meter boxes, though some boxes may need replacement or adjustment. The contractor will restore any areas disturbed during installation to their original condition.
